Battles among Three Kingdoms When talking about ThreeKingdoms, one cannot but think about Jingzhou. In talking about Jingzhou, oneis naturally reminded of theThreeKingdoms. Inthe time of Three Kingdoms, Jingzhou was the key site for the battle of theThree Kingdoms, and a decisive factor to the kingdoms’ future. Manypopular stories of Three Kingdoms, such as how Liu Bei was leased withJingzhou, Guan Yu guarded Jingzhou, and Lv Meng launched a sneak attack on Jingzhou arerelated to Jingzhou. Many major events that affects or decides the formationand developing of the Three Kingdoms, such as War of Chibi, War of Yiling, and Guanyu’s Attack on Xiangyang and Fancheng that leads tothe fall of Jingzhou, all happened in Jingzhou. The great work to reflect the historyof the Three Kingdoms, Romance of ThreeKingdoms, depicts the battles and competitions for Jingzhou. Among the 120chapters, two thirds directly or indirectly narrates about situation ofJingzhou, so Jingzhou is very closely related tothe Three Kingdoms, and the special relationis decided both by the historical background and the strategic location ofJingzhou at that age. The fiercecompetitions and battles on Jingzhou among the Three Kingdoms Wei, Shu and Wu,is the basic factor of the special relation. Inreferring to today’s map, Jingzhou in Han Dynasty include Hubei and Hunanprovinces, Nanyang Plain of Henan province, and the bordering region ofGuangdong, Guangxi and Guizhou. It was divided into 7 states: Nanjun,Jiangxia, Nanyang, Wuling, Changsha, Lingling, and Guiyang. In the time ofXiandi of Han Dynasty, Nanyang was split into two states: Nanyang andZhangling, making Jingzhou a total of 8 states. So in history, Jingzhou isdescribed as a region of “a hundred cities and 8 states”. Jingzhou in Han Dynasty covers the north and south regionof Yangtze River, a vast region with Yangtze River as the naturaldefense water line in the front, Jingzhou and Xiangyang City with Hanshui Riveras its back defense line, precipitous minority region and Three Gorges in thewest, and rivers of Wu and Yue regions on the east. So Jingzhou is a vastregion where an attack is easily launched and a defense easily enforced.Additionally, the economic and social development of the region wascomparatively high in its time, which provided abundant military supplies. Allthese were the significant factors considered by the statesmen and strategists in the time ofThree Kingdoms.
